Located in Northeast Nebraska in Dakota County, Homer was incorporated February 1, 1875, and named after poet Homer, by Martin Mansfield. Martin, a carpenter, erected the first house for John and Joseph Smith in 1871. Homer rebuilt after a fire in 1912 and the June floods of 1920 and 1940. Homer has a population of 590 and is still growing. Economic activities for this rural community include farming and cattle production. Homer is also home to many family owned businesses which include several cement contractors, construction companies and independent contractors who work in town and in the Sioux City area. Several small businesses are located on Homer's Main street, including an antique shop, auto repair and a bar. For more information contact:
